Several years ago now I submitted a preliminary application to the Board for the Certification of Genealogists to receive the Certified Genealogist credential. Life got in the way, and I believe I received an extension of time on the application, but ultimately life got in the way some more, and I never completed the application.
Several moves across the country later, I’m settled back in the mid-Atlantic and decided I was in a good place to reattempt. I submitted my preliminary application and reviewed the updated requirements, the most major of which seems to be splitting the cumulative ~150 page portfolio application into two phases. The first phase requires submission of an explanation of your genealogical education activities; “document work” asking you to transcribe, abstract, and pose a research question regarding a BCG-supplied document; and a kinship determination project in which you provide evidence for three generations of parent-child relationships. If this is approved, the second phase requires a research report exactly as it was submitted to the client; and a case study.
I’m hoping to finish my work for phase 1 by January of next year. We’ll see how things go!
